18-year-old Rameshbabu Pragyananda created history on August 21, Monday. He has reached the finals of Chess World Cup 2023. He also has a chance to write this history in golden letters, as he can lead India to victory in the FIDE World Cup after 21 years. India won the Chess World Cup when R Pragnanandan was not even born. In such a situation, this teenager has reached the threshold of getting one more title for the country.
India last won the Chess World Cup in 2002. Meanwhile, Viswanathan Anand made the country the world champion. Grandmaster Pragyananda of India was not even born at that time. Viswanathan Anand also managed to win the World Cup in 2000. Since then, no Indian has even made it to the top 4. However, now India has a chance to win the title and it can be made possible by 2005-born Rameshbabu Pragyananda.
Pragyanandha defeated American Fabiano Caruana 3.5-2.5 in the semi-final tiebreak of the FIDE World Cup Chess Tournament. Caruana is the number three player in the world. 18-year-old Pragyanandha got the better of the legendary USA grandmaster after the two-match classical series ended 1-1. Pragyanandha is the second Indian to reach the World Cup final. He will face Norway’s Magnus Carlsen for the title.
