New Delhi. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachitra Senanayake was arrested on charges of match fixing on Wednesday. He was arrested by the Sports Corruption Investigation Unit. 3 weeks ago the court banned him from going abroad. Senanayake has been accused of match-fixing in the Lanka Premier League 2020, in which he allegedly instigated two players to fix the match. The 38-year-old Senanayake played one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka. The off-spinner played his last international match in September 2016. He has taken more than 500 wickets in first class cricket. Senanayake has faced Rohit Sharma in ODI cricket.
Earlier, a Colombo court had imposed a travel ban on Sachitra Senanayake for 3 months. According to news agency PTI, the court was told today that the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigation Unit has directed the Attorney General’s Department to frame criminal charges against the former off-spinner. Earlier in 2014, Senanayake was also banned due to questionable bowling action. Later he improved his action and made a comeback in international cricket.
Many countries including Sri Lanka have been accused of cricket fixing. Talking about Sachitra Senanayake’s international career, she did not take a single wicket in Tests. He took 53 wickets in 49 ODIs. Best performance was 4 wickets for 13 runs. Apart from this, he took 25 wickets in 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka. Best performance was 4 wickets for 46 runs.
Sachitra Senanayake has taken 567 wickets in first class cricket. In 112 matches, he has taken 5 wickets 41 times and 10 wickets 8 times. He has taken 283 wickets in List-A cricket while taking a total of 124 wickets in T20.
