Voting for the 230-member assembly in Madhya Pradesh ended on November 17. 2,533 candidates contested in this election. According to the Election Commission, 76 percent of voters exercised their franchise in a single phase of voting. The wealth of candidates in Madhya Pradesh has increased significantly in this assembly election. In the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, 180 MLAs have reported an increase in their wealth ranging from 1 to 1,192 percent during 2018-2023, while another 12 MLAs have reported a decline in their wealth ranging from -1 to -64 percent.

Who is the richest and who is the poorest?
Chetanya Kashyap representing Ratlam city from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the richest MLA in the state. His wealth in 2018 was Rs. 204 crores in 2023 to Rs. 296 crores, of which Rs. There was an increase of 91.4 crores. In contrast, Congress MLA Kalpana Verma from Raigaon (SC) has the lowest assets. His wealth remained the least. His total wealth in 2023 was 33.65 lakh rupees. While in 2018 it was 14 lakh. His wealth has seen an increase of 139 percent.

Huge disparity in wealth of MLAs
The wealth disparity among MLAs has also been shocking. According to the affidavit, the combined wealth of the top 10 richest MLAs is Rs 1,728.52 crore, which is almost equal to the combined wealth of the other 182 MLAs. The assets of all other MLAs are Rs 1,692 crore.

How much property do the candidates of which party own?
The total assets of all 192 MLAs contesting the re-election is Rs 3,507.34 crore. The oldest party Congress has a share of 52.81 percent of the total amount. It is followed by BJP whose candidates own 46.05 percent of the assets. And others have 3.58 percent of the property. This data shows the economic dominance of these two major parties in the political landscape of the state.
