Bihar govt and Raj Bhavan tussle: Nitish Kumar meets Governor

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar in the backdrop of the ongoing tussle between the state government and the Raj Bhavan over the appointment of Vice Chancellors (VCs) in various universities in Bihar.
Soon after the meeting, the Raj Bhavan released a statement saying, “The Chief Minister called on the Governor at the Raj Bhavan and had a satisfactory discussion on issues related to higher education and universities.”

The chief minister’s visit to the Raj Bhavan to meet the governor came a day after the Bihar government’s education department invited applications for the post of vice-chancellor (VC) in various universities. The last date for applications invited by the department is September 13. August 27 is the last date for submission of applications in an advertisement issued by the Governor’s Secretariat.

The Nitish Kumar government and the Raj Bhavan are already at loggerheads over freezing the bank accounts of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur vice chancellor and vice chancellor. The education department refused to withdraw its earlier order to freeze the bank accounts of top university officials as directed by the Raj Bhavan.

The state education department on August 17 stopped the salary of the vice chancellor and pro-vice chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, for alleged failure to inspect educational institutions under his jurisdiction and for not attending a review meeting called by the education department. A day later, Principal Secretary to the Governor-cum-Chancellor Robert L Chongthu sent a letter to the bank concerned, directing the lifting of the freeze on the accounts of both the officials and the university with immediate effect.
