MBBS Seats: Union Minister of State for Health Bharti Praveen Pawar said that the Center has decided to increase 50 more MBBS seats in the ‘North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS)’ here. Pawar said the Center would provide all necessary assistance to Meghalaya to set up its medical college. “We are going to increase 50 more seats from next year, taking the total number of (MBBS) seats in NEIGRIHMS to 100,” the Union minister told PTI here on Thursday night. The Union Minister said that the Center is focusing on strengthening tertiary health care including primary and secondary as the Prime Minister’s vision is to strengthen the health care system through central government schemes. Pawar said that the Center is providing a separate budget to strengthen NEIGRIHMS. He said, “Last year the budget was Rs 480 crore and this year the budget is Rs 528 crore. That’s why we are constantly increasing (the budget).” He praised the institute’s achievements, including radio therapy treatment. When asked if the Center would help Meghalaya to build its medical college, the Union Minister of State for Health said, “The government will definitely help. And we are also strengthening NEIGRIHMS. We will also help for the upcoming medical college.”
