Anil Kapoor was not the first choice for this hit film, the makers wanted Amitabh Bachchan

The cult superhero film Mr. India… starring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Amrish Puri in lead roles is one of the most popular Bollywood films. In a recent interview, Anil Kapoor’s brother, producer Boney Kapoor revealed that the 1987 film was initially made with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role in mind. Speaking to ETimes, Boney Kapoor said that after launching his brother Anil Kapoor as the lead hero with ‘Wo Saat Din’ in 1983, he wanted to work with the film’s director Bapu again. Because Saat Din was a remake of the 1981 Tamil film ‘Andha 7 Nataka’…So Boney didn’t want to do another remake and asked Javed Akhtar to write a new script. But Bapu was not ready to wait any longer. Due to which the project was cancelled.

“I heard the story of Mr. India seven days later. Javed Akhtar sahab, Naresh Goyal and I were going to make Mr. India, with Ramesh Sippy as the director and Amitabh Bachchan as the hero… But things didn’t work out.. So once I And when Javed Sahib was sitting, I said, ‘Let’s make this film’. He said, “It is an expensive picture. G.P. Sippy was hesitant to make it with Amitabh Bachchan. How can you make it with Anil Kapoor?”

Boney further said, “I said we will make it. At that time when big films with top stars were made for Rs 1 and 1.5 crore. I made a film for Rs 3 crore and Rs 20 lakh. A reel of the film at that time, I got Rs. . 80 lakh was a loss. But in the first year I got money and name and the film is still remembered.”
