In an interview to ETimes, the film’s producer Boney Kapoor said that after launching his brother Anil Kapoor as the lead hero in ‘Wo Saat Din’ in 1983, he was planning to work again with the film’s director Bapu. He heard Mr. India’s story seven days later. A plan was made to make Mr. India with Javed Akhtar Sahab, Naresh Goyal and me Ramesh Sippy as the director and Amitabh Bachchan as the hero. But it didn’t work… So once when I sat with Javed Sahib, he said, ‘Let’s make this film’. Later, after Amitabh’s refusal, the film went to Anil Kapoor and proved to be a blockbuster.

A big budget film
Keeping his point forward, Boney Kapoor said that during that time I took the responsibility of making this film myself. At a time when big films with top stars were made on a budget of Rs 1 and 1.5 crore. Even during that time, I spent money like water and prepared the film for 3 crore and 20 lakh rupees. I had a loss of 80 lakhs during the reel of the film. But within the first year I got money and fame. This is the reason why this film is remembered even today.
