Watch: ‘Bhasma Aarti’ held at Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar temple on last Monday of Shravan

‘Bhasma Aarti’ (oblation with ashes) is a famous ceremony here. This is done during ‘Brahma Muhurta’ from 3:00 am to 5:30 am.

Former Minister and Congress MLA Jaivardhan Singh also participated in Bhasma Aarti last Shravan Monday.

Singh told ANI, “Today, the last Monday of Shravan, we had the opportunity to have a darshan of Baba Mahakal and specially attend the Bhasma Aarti. We prayed to Lord Mahakal that his immense blessings be upon all.”

‘Saavan’ also known as ‘Shravan’ is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months. Observing a fast every Monday during this period is considered very auspicious to seek the grace of Lord Shiva.

According to religious beliefs, the month of Shravan is considered to be the favorite month of Lord Shiva. It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva during this time gives immediate relief from suffering. This year the month of Shravan is 59 days long, starting from July 4 and ending on August 31.

According to the temple priest Yash Sharma, before the Bhasma Aarti, Baba Mahakal was anointed with water and Panchamrit, which also had milk, curd, ghee, honey and fruit juice. After this Baba Mahakal was decorated with hemp, sandalwood and then the idol was dressed. After this Bhasma Aarti was performed amidst dhol and conch sound.

Apart from this, there is a tradition of taking Baba Mahakal ride every Monday in the month of Shravan-Bhado. That is why Baba Mahakal’s ride will also be taken out this evening. It is believed that Baba Mahakal visits the city to know the condition of the people. Devotees also wait for hours on the roadside to see the ride and consider themselves blessed by seeing Mahakala.
