New Delhi has always been represented by male diplomats since 1947 when Mr. Prakash was sent as Indian High Commissioner to the then Pakistan. There have been 22 heads of the Indian High Commissioner so far. The previous Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad was Ajay Bisaria, who was withdrawn in 2019 following Pakistan’s decision to downgrade the status of the High Commission after the abrogation of Article 370. The Pakistani and Indian High Commissions in Islamabad and Delhi are respectively managed by their respective Charge d’Affaires after Pakistan downgraded diplomatic relations after the central government revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. In fact, women diplomats have been posted to Pakistan in the past as well, but not at high levels. It is also considered a difficult posting, as Islamabad was declared a “non-family” posting for Indian diplomats a few years ago. This generally prevents women officers from taking charge in Pakistan.
