At least a quarter of the MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu’s deemed universities were vacant after the second round of NEET counselling. While an average of 12 percent MBBS seats across the country are vacant. After the seat allotment by the Medical Counseling Committee, 1188 seats remained vacant out of the total 9737 MBBS seats in 50 deemed universities of the country. Almost half of these vacant seats are in Tamil Nadu. There are total 11 deemed universities in the state with 2350 MBBS seats available. Even after two rounds of NEET UG counselling, 584 of these seats remain vacant.
According to a report published in Times of India, Shree Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute has 76 percent vacant seats, SCS Medical College and Hospital has 54 percent seats, Bharat Medical College and Hospital has 58 percent and 45 percent seats. “Vacancy may increase if students do not take admission in the allotted seats,” said a vice-chancellor of a deemed university. These vacant seats are not uncommon after the completion of two rounds of counselling, when the student does not want to bind himself by paying a fee of Rs. Meanwhile, the State Selection Committee has declared the results of the second round of MBBS\BDS counseling for state quota seats in government medical colleges and all seats in self-financed colleges and private medical universities. OC cut-off for government college was 602, while BC cut-off was 556 and BCM 541. The final score of a candidate to be allotted an MBBS seat in a government college was 355 (ST). For government quota seats in private colleges, the OC cut-off was 502, BC 493 and BCM 481 and the final candidate score for private college admission was 301.
