Thiruvananthapuram:

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government’s ‘one nation, one election’ proposal, saying there was no practical way such a system could be implemented.

Tharoor, on his first visit to his Lok Sabha constituency after becoming a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), told reporters here that the government’s ‘one nation, one election’ initiative would go against the existing system based on parliamentary democracy, where the House Parties cannot remain in power after losing majority.

“There is no practical way you can implement such a system,” Tharoor said.

A day after announcing a “special session” of Parliament, the government on Friday constituted a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind to explore the possibility of “one nation, one election”.

Shashi Tharoor said that the Chief Executive of the country is selected by parliamentary majority and legislative majority and as soon as the majority goes, for whatever reason, the government falls. Then a new election will have to be held according to the calendar.

He said that between 1947 and 1967, all national and state elections in India were held on the same date, but this system collapsed when the coalition government fell in 1967 and the calendar slipped.
