England announced their 13-man squad for the three-match home ODI series against Ireland on Wednesday. Jack Crowley, who has played three ODIs, will lead England in the Ireland series. Crowley will lead England for the first time. His Test opening partner Ben Duckett has been handed the vice-captaincy against Ireland. There are three uncapped players in the squad, including batsman Sam Hahn, wicketkeeper batsman Jamie Smith and fast bowler George Scrimshaw.

England’s budding batsman Harry Brooke has been selected for the Ireland series. He has also been included as batting cover for the four-match ODI series against New Zealand starting September 8. In such a situation, the door of World Cup 2023 is still open for Brook. England have announced their starting squad for the 2023 World Cup, which does not include Brook’s name. Brooke was dropped from the squad after Ben Stokes withdrew his ODI retirement.

However, all teams have the right to make changes to their World Cup squads without the ICC’s permission until September 28. England limited-overs head coach Matthew Mott repeatedly stressed on Tuesday that the list of 15 players sent to the ICC was not final and that players were likely to be included in the squad in the coming weeks. The World Cup will be held in India from October 5 to November 19.

The ODI series between England and New Zealand will be played from September 8 to September 15. This will be followed by the England and Ireland series. The first match of the England vs Ireland series will be played on September 20 at Headingley. The second match will be played in Nottingham on September 23 while the third match will be played in Bristol on September 26.

England squad for Ireland series: Jack Crowley (C), Harry Brook, Brydon Carrs, Ben Duckett (VC), Sam Hahn, Will Jacks, Rehan Ahmed, Craig Overton, Matthew Potts, Phil Salt, Luke Wood, George Scrimshaw, Jamie Smith.
