Haddi Movie Review: Nawazuddin-Anurag clash, but loose story robs ‘Haddi’ of its soul

Review of Haddi in Hindi: Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Anurag Kashyap, who have worked together in many films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’, Sacred Games, have given the audience a very different kind of cinema. The pair are seen together once again in ‘Haddi’, but the difference is that this time Anurag is not directing Nawaz but opposite him as the villain. Nawaz is seen in a transgender avatar for the first time in ‘Haddi’. There have been many films in Hindi cinema depicting the pain and suffering of transgenders, but ‘Haddi’ is different in many ways. The film presents the world of crime in Delhi-Noida in a stark avatar amid the world of transgenders.

What the story says: The story of Haddi is about Haddi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a transgender from Allahabad in Delhi, who comes here and joins a gang. While explaining the meaning of his name, Haddi very honestly says in the dialogue, ‘I was hanged as a child, I was hanged but there was no bone in my neck, so the noose slipped.’ Haddi joins this gang to take revenge from the criminal politician Pramod Ahlawat (Anurag Kashyap) who is running a very nefarious underworld of crime under the guise of politics. This film is this revenge story.

Directed by Akshat Ajay Sharma and Adamya Bhalla, this film brings a serious and complex subject to the screen. The film brings to light the business of missing bodies, which is heart-wrenching to hear about. You will have a hard time understanding the story of the first half hour of this 2 hour 14 minute film. To maintain the suspense of the story, the director has kept the crime under wraps till the last part, around which the story revolves from the very first scene. In such a situation, the question often arises that what is the business after all? Another problem is that Nawaz, who is reduced to a bone in the climax of the story, is hit by several bullets, but no attempt is made to explain how he survived and where he got there in just a few months.

Anurag Kashyap has directed Nawaz in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’.

The best thing about the movie ‘Haddi’ is its performance which will not let you down at all, but the emotion on which this whole story is built may not reach the audience with such intensity. Nawaz is an actor who has brought life to even the coldest of scripts with his brilliant acting. His performance in Bone is on a different level. He is so comfortable and accurate in the role of a transgender that you start believing in his character. In such a situation, even if you stay connected to the story based on the performance, the complexity of the story cannot be ignored.

This look of Nawazuddin has created a lot of excitement among the audience.

Anurag Kashyap, the director-turned-actor, has tried to add a touch of comedy to his grim villain avatar, but his style often reminds you of actor Prakash Raj. Vipin Sharma is only in a few scenes, but even in them he leaves a huge impact. The same should be said about Ila Arun who makes a wonderful impact in just a few scenes. Ila is the only female actress in the entire cast of Haddi, whom you will see on screen.

The music of the film is good and supports the story perfectly. Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s film ‘Haddi’ is a film that is highly embellished with acting, but if the story would have supported it, it could have been a great film. 2.5 stars for this movie from me.
