Report of news agency ‘Reuters’ Rishi Sunak, visiting India for the G20 summit, told his ministers this week that talks were progressing, but he would only agree on an approach that worked for Britain as a whole.
In June, Business Minister Cammy Badenoch said Britain would discuss temporary business visas as part of trade talks, but would not discuss wider immigration commitments or access to the UK labor market for Indian workers.
He said, ‘The Prime Minister believes that the current level of migration is too high. Frankly, we have no plans to change our migration policy to achieve this free trade agreement. This includes student visas as well. Home Minister Suella Braverman sparked controversy last year with comments about the potential impact of Indian migrants in trade talks, raising concerns about “any open border immigration policy with India” and visa overstaying.
However, India’s High Commissioner to Britain, Vikram Doriaswamy, said that there was an assumption in the British press that India wanted more visas, but not in the Indian media. “We have never said visas are part of our demand,” he told Times Radio.
He said India instead sought easier ways for companies to move British and Indian nationals from one country to another. “We’re not asking immigrants to be able to come here.”
