The film was made on the insistence of director Aditya Chopra and later the film turned out to be a miraculous magic. When the makers heard the story before the film was made, they found it light and the romance too absurd. But Aditya Chopra remained firm on his decision. When the director narrated the story to cinematographer Manmohan Singh and art director Sharmasita Roy for the shooting of the film in 1994, they did not agree at all.

Film reviewer Anpama Chopra, recalling the stories of the making of DDLJ, wrote, ‘When Aditya Chopra narrated the story of this film, people considered it weak.

Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan’s film Karan-Arjun came second with a collection of 22 crores. While DDLJ Rs. 53 crores and was at number one. The worldwide earnings of the film crossed 109 crores.
