Mumbai. When ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ) released on 20 October 1995, no one could have dreamed that the film was going to become the blockbuster of the century. When people came to watch the film on the first show, they were heartbroken to see Prem on screen.
As the clock ticked and the first show ended, the appreciation of the film automatically drew people to the theatres. People were so enthralled by Shahrukh Khan and Kajol’s romance that the theaters remained crowded for weeks. The film not only became a blockbuster at the box office but also gifted Shahrukh Khan eternal stardom.

The film was made on the insistence of director Aditya Chopra and later the film turned out to be a miraculous magic. When the makers heard the story before the film was made, they found it light and the romance too absurd. But Aditya Chopra remained firm on his decision. When the director narrated the story to cinematographer Manmohan Singh and art director Sharmasita Roy for the shooting of the film in 1994, they did not agree at all.

After hearing the narration of the film, both the actors said that a boy cannot come to India for his love for 2 days. It was also argued that the film’s love story should have less gravity. But Aditya Chopra remained firm on his stubbornness and made this film according to his vision. Film reviewer Anpama Chopra, recalling the stories of the making of DDLJ, wrote, ‘When Aditya Chopra narrated the story of this film, people considered it weak.

Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan’s film Karan-Arjun came second with a collection of 22 crores. While DDLJ Rs. 53 crores and was at number one. The worldwide earnings of the film crossed 109 crores.
