All India Chess Federation (AICF) President Sanjay Kapoor said Indian chess has entered a ‘golden era’ and the country will have more than 100 Grandmasters (GMs) in two years. For years, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand dominated Indian chess, but that has changed in the last decade as young players like R Pragyanandha, D Gukesh and Arjun Arrigi have made rapid progress on the international stage.
Sanjay Kapoor told PTI, “Earlier there was only one player Vishi (Anand) but I believe now the golden age of chess has started in India. Anand is an experienced player of this game. It is the face of Indian chess, but now we will have multiple faces which will be best for Indian chess. Will get his 100th Grandmaster.
He said, “Many male and female players are coming forward. We have 83 GMs now and in two years we will have at least 100 or more than 100 grandmasters.” Defeated Fabiano Caruna, ranked no. He became the youngest player in the world to play in the final, as well as the third youngest player to qualify for the Candidates tournament.

It was the first time that four Indian players, Pragyanandha, Gukesh, Arrigi and Vidit Gujarati, made it to the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Last year, India won bronze medals in both men’s and women’s categories during its successful run of the Olympiad. Kapoor wants to promote chess by organizing camps and tournaments across the country. He said, “Tamil Nadu is the center of chess in India. But now players have started coming from different places. eye Jammu and Kashmir I want to take chess everywhere from India to Northeast. ,
Kapoor said that the federation is also working on organizing an ‘Indian Chess League’. He said, “We are going to start a league. Maybe from the first week of January, I can’t give a tentative date but we are working on it.” Given the recent success, Kapoor feels the sport will start getting funding and sponsors soon. He said, “What is seen is sold. Earlier nobody was interested in chess in India. But now that is changing. People will now see us and the corporate world will start funding.
