Are Team India doors closed for Dhawan? Agarkar’s statement caused an uproar

New Delhi. The Indian cricket team for Asia Cup 2023 was announced on Monday. Experienced opener Shikhar Dhawan has not been included in the 17-man squad. Earlier, Dhawan was not included in the ODI squad even on the Windies tour. After that there was hope that he could get a place in the Asia Cup but after that he was disappointed. In such a situation, the question now arises whether the doors of return to Team India are closed for Dhawan? Team India chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s answers when asked about Dhawan suggest that the veteran left-arm opener’s return is now unlikely.

Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma held a press conference after announcing the Asia Cup squad. When Agarkar was asked about Dhawan, he said, ‘Dhawan has been brilliant for India for some time now. But currently Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan are our favorite openers. Agarkar’s statement makes it clear that the door is hardly open for Dhawan to return to Team India.

37-year-old Shikhar Dhawan has not got a place in Tests and T20Is. He only plays ODIs. He played his last ODI in December last year against Bangladesh, while he last appeared in Tests in 2018. He has been out of Team India since the Bangladesh tour.

Shikhar Dhawan has so far played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20 Internationals. Dhawan has scored 2315 runs with 7 centuries in Tests while he has 6793 runs in ODIs including 17 centuries. Dhawan has scored 1759 runs in T20 Internationals.
