Indian badminton legend HS Pranaya and Asian Games gold medalist duo Satviksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty reached the quarterfinals of their respective categories at the China Masters on Thursday. World Championship bronze medalist Prannoy defeated Denmark’s Magnus Johansen 21-12, 21-18. Pranay is the only Indian player left in men’s singles. The eighth seed will now face third seed Kodai Naroka of Japan.
Lakshya, Srikanth out in first round, eyes on Satvik and Chirag
Top seeds Chirag and Satwik also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Japan’s Akira Koga and Taichi Seito 21-15, 21-16. Now he will face Indonesia’s Leo Roli Carnando and Daniel Martin. Prannoy started well against the Japanese player and took a 6-1 lead in the first game. The Danes later extended the lead to 8-6 and 14-11.
After this Prannoy used all his experience and won the first game. In the second game, the match was tied and both played a great game for 15 points. At one point the score was tied at 18-18 but Prannoy pressed in the last moments to seal the win. Earlier in the China Masters, both India’s star badminton players Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth were eliminated in the men’s singles after losing in the first round.

Lakshya Sen is ranked number 17 and also won the Canada Open this year. Along with this, Srikanth, ranked 24th, also had to face defeat. Srikanth has been eliminated in the first round for the third consecutive tournament in the world tour. Lakshya and Srikanth have to finish in the top-16 in the rankings by April 28 next year, only then they can qualify for the Paris Olympics.
