Beijing:
China has backed the proposal to include the African Union (AU) in the G-20, saying it is the first country to strongly support the African group’s inclusion in the organization. PM Narendra Modi recently said in an interview to ‘PTI-Bhasha’ that India supports the inclusion of the African Union as a full member of the G-20 group of world’s largest economies because the planet has no future. All cannot succeed without representation and their voices being heard.
AU will reportedly be inducted into the organization during the G-20 summit to be held in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. When asked about this, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press conference held here, “China is the first country that has clearly expressed support for the AU to join the G20”.
“During the recent dialogue between China-Africa leaders, President Xi Jinping once again emphasized that China fully supports the AU’s full membership in the G-20,” he said.
Support for a greater role for the AU in global governance
Mao said China and the AU are important partners in building a high-level system with a common future and safeguarding international equality and justice. “We support a greater role for the AU in global governance,” he said.
In the last few years, India has positioned itself as a leading voice in representing the concerns, challenges and aspirations of the Global South or developing countries, particularly the African continent, on the global stage.
PM Modi advocated full membership of G20 to African Union
Prime Minister Modi is playing a leadership role on the African Union’s G-20 membership issue. In June, PM Modi wrote to G20 leaders and advocated full membership of the group to the African Union at the New Delhi summit. Weeks later, during the third G20 Sherpa meeting in Hampi, Karnataka in July, the proposal was formally incorporated into the draft communique for the summit.
In his article published in several Indian newspapers on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi said, “Our President has not only seen the largest ever participation of African countries, but we have also achieved the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20.”
The US also supported the inclusion of the African Union
The US has also strongly supported the inclusion of the AU in the G-20. The final decision to include the AU in the G-20 will be taken at the summit to be held on September 9 and 10 in New Delhi.
The African Union (AU) is an influential organization comprising 55 countries on the African continent. The G-20 includes 19 of the world’s richest countries and the European Union.
