Team India’s former fast bowler Ishant Sharma has told what is the difference between the captaincy of Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Ishant has played international cricket under the captaincy of both and said what separates the two. Before Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli was the all format captain of Team India. Soon after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, Virat decided to quit the captaincy of T20 Internationals. A few months later, he was dropped from the captaincy of the ODI team and subsequently also gave up the captaincy of the Test team. Before Virat, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the captain of Team India. Dhoni handed over the Test captaincy to Virat a long time ago and then spent the last four-five years of his international career as a senior player, handing over the ODI and T20 team to Virat. Ishant has praised Virat’s captaincy.

Ishant Sharma said on Jio Cinema’s Home of Heroes show, ‘Virat Kohli was an aggressive captain, if you bowl with a new ball, you can spend 25 runs in the first five overs, if you take two wickets. The most important thing with him was that he gave everyone a specific role. He used to tell me, ‘You have played enough matches, now it’s time to set the batsman. Don’t bowl thinking that you have to bowl in one area, you have to think about how to get wickets. He would go to Shami and say, ‘I know you can take wickets, but I want you to bowl consistently now, so that you can bowl three maidens in a row.’ He would go to Bumrah and say, ‘It’s your debut, you do what you do, but consistency is the most important thing in Test cricket.’ After 2021, we realized that he wants us all to think outside the box.

Asked about Virat Kohli’s captaincy, Ishant said, ‘He was the best, when Virat was the captain, the bowling was perfect in every way. When we were playing under the leadership of Mahi Bhai we were going through a transition phase, at that time Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav were new and there was only me apart from him. Everyone else was moving. Till date there has never been a communicator like Mahi Bhai. He prepared the bowlers and left it for Virat. Shami and Umesh have become different bowlers over time. Then came Jasprit Bumrah. So Virat got the complete package. What Virat did best was to identify each player’s strengths and then address them accordingly.
