Olga Carmona’s first-half goal helped Spain win its first FIFA Women’s World Cup title with a 1-0 win over England on Sunday. Spain won the title in less than a year due to a player revolt. Spain’s first major international title made them the first European team to win the Women’s Football World Cup since Germany in 2007. Carmona struck a left-footed shot in the 29th minute of the match, which England goalkeeper Mary Arps failed to clear despite diving.

England were favorites for the title after winning the UEFA European Championship last year.
But three of its best players captain Leah Williamson, Fran Kirby and Beth Mead missed the World Cup due to knee injuries. England coach Sarina Wegman became the first coach under whose guidance teams reached two consecutive World Cup finals. Under his guidance, the Netherlands team also reached the final in 2019 but lost 0-2 to the United States.
