India beat Japan 35-1 to enter semi-finals of Asian Hockey 5 World Cup Qualifiers

The Maninder Singh-led Indian men’s hockey team produced a goal-scoring display in their final league match of the Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifiers, beating Japan 35-1 and making it to the semi-finals. Japan looked helpless against the Indian team. They scored seven goals in the first five minutes and after this they showed no mercy to the Japanese team. Maninder Singh scored 10 goals for India. Apart from him, Mohammad Rahil scored seven, Pawan Rajbhar and Gurjot Singh five each, Sukhwinder four, captain Mandeep More three and Jugraj Singh one. Masataka Kobori scored the only goal for Japan.

The Indian team defeated Malaysia 7-5 in the previous match. Gurjot scored five goals for India in this match while Maninder and Rahil scored one goal each.

Arif Ishaq, Captain Ismail Abu, Mohammad Din, Kamarul Zaman Kamaruddin and Sayarman scored for Malaysia. With these two big wins on the day, India finished second in the elite pool table behind Pakistan with 12 points, thus qualifying directly for the semi-finals. India will play the second semi-final match of the tournament on Saturday.

India’s only defeat in the league stage was at the hands of Pakistan. Team India had to face a 4-5 defeat. Maninder Singh (17th, 29th), Gurjot Singh (12th) and Mohammad Raheel (21st) scored goals for India in this match played on Wednesday. Ehtesham Aslam (2nd, 3rd), Zikaria Hayat (5th), Abdul Rehman (13th) and Abdul Rana (26th) scored for Pakistan.

Earlier, Team India registered a great victory against Oman by 12-2.
