Tanveer Sangha took 4 important wickets for 31 runs.
Australia defeated South Africa by 111 runs in this match.
New Delhi. As of Wednesday (August 30) morning, Tanveer Sangha was not scheduled to play in Australia’s first T20 match against South Africa. He wasn’t even part of the Australian squad on Tuesday (August 29), but something happened that saw the youngster picked and took four wickets in his debut match. And thus Indian-origin Australian cricketer Tanveer Sangha started his debut brilliantly.
The 21-year-old Tanveer Sangh arrived in Durban on Tuesday for the ODI series. But when he was in the hotel gym, he got information about his playing. Adam Zampa revealed that he is not feeling well. He has tested negative for Covid-19, but is still feeling the effects of the disease. Sangh was still struggling with jetlag, but he accepted it!
In the opening match of the series, Tanveer Sangha was picked in the playing eleven at the last minute. With this, this young player has become only the second Indian-origin cricketer after Gurinder Sandhu to play for Australia. He vindicated his selection decision by taking four wickets. Tanveer Sangha took 4 important wickets for 31 runs. Earlier, Australia’s Michael Kasprowicz achieved this feat against New Zealand. Kasprowicz took 4 wickets for 29 runs on his T20 international debut. Tanveer is the first Australian bowler since 2005 to take 4 wickets in a T20 International debut match.
After the big 111-run victory, new captain Mitchell Marsh revealed that the young player kept his nerves well under control when given the sudden opportunity. “He was very calm and said he was ready to go,” said Mitchell Marsh, who scored 92 runs. “He got off the plane yesterday, didn’t play until this morning… I’m sure he was nervous, but you can do it,” Marsh said in the post-match press conference.
Sangha was playing for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred and is the youngest Australian leg-spinner to take four wickets. Sangha told SEN 1170, “This is a great start. This helps. When you bat really well and get a big score on the board, you know the opponent is going to come after you… That obviously helps me and makes my job a lot easier.”
Let us tell you that when the young player was selected in Australia’s ODI World Cup 2023 squad, he raised many questions. Many were questioning the rookie’s inclusion in the 18-man squad. But now Tanvir Sangha has given the selectors a headache after his debut match, as the ODI World Cup squad has to be picked from 15 members instead of 18.
