Ahead of the Asia Cup 2023, Indian cricketers on Thursday underwent a rigorous fitness ‘exercise’ that included a ‘yo-yo’ test. All the players present in this exercise passed the ‘Yo-Yo’ test. Not surprisingly, Virat Kohli managed to score the highest 17.2 points in this. The test is a part of the six-day orientation camp and skill development camp. The BCCI (Indian Cricket Board) has set a fitness parameter of 16.5.
It is learned that apart from Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma and ODI team vice-captain Hardik Pandya were also involved in the ‘exercise’ along with other players at the KSCA-Alur ground here and passed the test.
“All the tests were successful and the report will be sent to the BCCI soon,” an informed source told PTI. is believed.
All four will travel to Bengaluru from Dublin to play a three-match T20 international series against Ireland. Apart from the ‘yo-yo’ test on Thursday, the ‘exercises’ were mostly indoors but the outdoor drills will be extended from Friday.
Players returning from Ireland will not be given a ‘yo-yo’ test but will be included in the skill-honing part of the camp. PTI reported on Wednesday that during the camp, the players will be tested for several parameters like lipid profile, blood sugar, uric acid, calcium, vitamin B12 and D, creatinine, testosterone and Dexa tests.
The outdoor activities will include ‘match simulation’ sessions supervised by batting coach Vikram Rathore and head coach Rahul Dravid. The team management is keeping a close eye on KL Rahul’s progress. Rahul was also involved in fitness drills but was not put through the yo-yo test.
Rahul has been included in India’s Asia Cup squad and chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the wicket-keeper batsman suffered a minor injury unrelated to his previous injury. Sanju Samson has been included in the Asia Cup squad as a ‘reserve’ player as Rahul’s cover.
The team management and National Cricket Academy (NCA) staff are satisfied with Rahul’s batting fitness but need more clarity on the player’s readiness for wicket-keeping responsibilities.
