NCP MP from Lakshadweep (UT) Mohammad Faisal has received a major blow from the Supreme Court. After which his sword of disqualification from the Lok Sabha has been hung again. The Supreme Court reinstated the sentence in the attempted murder case and quashed the Kerala High Court’s decision to acquit him.

No by-election required at present: Election Commission
In fact, the Union Territory of Lakshadweep had challenged the stay on the sentence. Earlier, the court had disposed of the plea. The Election Commission told the court that since the conviction has been stayed by the court itself, notification for the by-election will not be issued yet. That means there will be no need to hold by-elections at present.

Mohammad Faisal challenged the press note issued by the Election Commission regarding the by-election of the Lakshadweep parliamentary constituency. However, the Election Commission did not issue a notification for the election. The commission had on January 18 said that the by-election to the Lakshadweep Lok Sabha seat would be held on February 27 along with by-elections to six assembly seats in five states after the disqualification of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Faisal. After this the membership of the judgment was restored.
