The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) senior men’s selection committee on Monday announced India’s 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are returning to the Indian team after major injuries. Chief selector and former Team India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar said that Shreyas Iyer is fully fit, while KL Rahul is fully recovered from an earlier injury, but has a slight limp. Team India captain Rohit Sharma was also involved in the selection committee meeting. Not only that, after the announcement of the team, Rohit and Ajit Agarkar held a press conference and answered questions from the media. Meanwhile, Agarkar talked about meeting KL Rahul. Former Team India all-rounder and 1983 World Champion Team India member Madan Lal has since put a lot of class on Rohit and Agarkar.
Questions raised over Tilak’s selection, getting ready for ODIs after failing in T20s
Madan Lal said on Aajtak, ‘I don’t think the team management and selectors are yet to say for sure whether KL Rahul is fully fit or not. Injury or swallowing? He should have made this clear. He has kept Shreyas Iyer in the team, whose fitness is also not clear. Both have not played any competitive cricket, should have been selected once they have proved match fitness. Batting in nets and batting in live matches are two completely different things.
Chahal out of Asia Cup squad, what did the former legend say about the decision? learn
On Rahul and Iyer’s return to the team, Ajit Agarkar said, ‘Shreyas Iyer has been declared fully fit, Rahul is sore, this is not his previous injury, and that is why we have chosen Sanju Samson as backup. We all want Rahul to be fully fit, if not in the opening match of the Asia Cup, then at least from the second or third match. This might be bad news for KL Rahul, but Shreyas Iyer is fully fit and that bodes well for us. Both are very important players for us, we will not announce the squad for the World Cup before the September 5 deadline.
