Bamako. Islamic terrorists launched a major attack in Mali on Thursday. At least 49 civilians and 15 soldiers were killed in an attack by Islamist militants on a military camp and a ship in northeastern Mali on Thursday, the Malian government said in a statement. Many people have also been injured in this attack. Militants attacked boats carrying civilians from flood-hit areas. The ship was carrying people from Gao when it was attacked. The Malian army said on social media that the boat was attacked by “armed terrorist groups” at 11am.

Boat operator Commonway told the AFP news agency that the vessel was hit by at least three rockets targeting its engine. In addition, the attackers also attacked a military camp in Borem Circle, an administrative subdivision of the Gao region in the north-east of Mali. The attacks were “claimed” by a group linked to al-Qaeda. Apart from this, the internal government said that around 50 attackers have been killed in the retaliatory action.

Three days of national mourning have been declared following the attack. The northern city of Timbuktu has been under blockade since late last month and there have been several other recent attacks on transport. Mali has been ruled by a military junta since 2020.
