Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora on Friday issued social media guidelines for police personnel. He asked the police personnel to maintain the dignity of uniform and not to use any equipment for reel or video.

According to this guideline, police personnel should not comment, post or share any confidential information related to any pending trial or suspect or arrested person.
Permission must be sought for social media posts related to training or duties
It has been stated that policemen should not post any statement, photo or video related to departmental training, activities or duties on social media without written permission. Also, refrain from posting any such comments which may be offensive to the victim, suspect or any group.

Additionally, the guidelines state that it is illegal to reveal the identity of a minor or a complainant of sexual harassment through social media. It is illegal for policemen to record and broadcast photographs or videos of a protected person or high-security area/premises.
The police commissioner said that being a member of a disciplined force, policemen should not post anything on social media that is against national interest or internal security.
Prohibition from being part of social media campaign against political subject
At the same time, the guidelines also state that content posted by police personnel on social media should not be illegal, obscene, abusive, threatening or abuse intellectual property rights. Police personnel and officers should not post anything that violates the Code of Conduct. It states that their participation in any group or forum created to promote or agitate any religion, caste, sect or sub-caste is illegal. Policemen are also prohibited from being part of any social media campaign against any political topic.
Official use of image or video only
There have been many cases of police personnel’s mobile phones and cameras being used for operational coverage and sensitive material being uploaded on social media. It states that any such picture or video should be for official use only.
