Video of earthquake in Morocco: More than 800 people were killed in a devastating earthquake that struck Morocco late Friday night. The earthquake damaged many buildings, from the historic city of Marrakesh to villages in the Atlas Mountains. Leaders of many countries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have offered help to Morocco. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers struggle to reach remote affected areas. As soon as the earthquake struck, people who were sleeping in the houses started running outside. Footage broadcast on state television showed people fearing to go back into the streets and buildings of downtown Marrakesh late at night.
CCTV footage of this earthquake has come to light. By seeing this one can estimate how intense this earthquake was. In the video, some people are seen sitting outside the building. During this time an earthquake occurs and the building begins to shake violently. As they feel the earth shaking, they immediately start running away. The footage shows a large number of people running from one place to another. Meanwhile, some people also fall on the road. At the end of the video it can be seen that the earthquake was so strong that the building collapsed. The video, uploaded by BNO News on social media site X, has gone viral. So far it has been viewed more than 1.5 lakh times.
At the same time, after the earthquake, a man said he was going to a nearby apartment, when utensils and objects hanging on the wall started falling. A woman said she left her home after feeling ‘intense shaking’. A man holding a child in his arms said he was awakened by the shock of the earthquake. Emergency workers wearing yellow jackets searched for survivors buried under the rubble of buildings. Moroccan media reported that the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque, one of the city’s most famous landmarks, was damaged, but the extent of the damage was not yet clear. Its 69-metre (226-ft) minaret is known as the ‘Roof of Marrakesh’. Moroccans have shared several videos on social media, showing buildings collapsing into rubble and dust everywhere. Parts of the famous red walls surrounding Marrakesh have been damaged.
Morocco’s interior ministry said on Saturday that at least 820 people had died, most of them in Marrakesh and five provinces near the centre. According to the ministry, 672 others are injured, of which 205 are in critical condition. The head of a town near the epicenter told Moroccan news site 2M that many houses in nearby towns had partially or completely collapsed, power was cut in some places and roads were blocked. Abderrahim et Daoud, head of Talat en Yaqoob city, said authorities were clearing roads in the province so that ambulances could pass and provide aid to the affected population. He said it would take time to assess the damage due to the extreme distance between the villages located on the hill. Local media reported that rescue operations were slow because roads leading to the mountainous region around the epicenter were blocked. The Moroccan military and emergency personnel are trying to provide aid to areas affected by the damage, but roads leading to the mountainous region around the epicenter were blocked by vehicles and rock debris, slowing rescue operations.
