Supreme Court acquitted actor and former Tamil Nadu MLA S. they. Dismissing the plea filed by Shekhar, it said that people who use social media should be careful about its influence and reach.
Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice P.K. The Mishra bench was hearing a plea filed by Shekhar against the Madras High Court’s July 14 order, which dismissed his plea to quash criminal proceedings in the matter.

“If one uses social media, he should be more careful about its impact and reach,” the bench told the lawyer representing the petitioner. The lawyer argued that on the day of the incident, Shekhar had put medicine in his eyes due to which he could not read the content of the shared post. The bench said that caution should be exercised while using social media. The Supreme Court said that if a person finds it necessary to use social media, he should also be prepared to suffer the consequences.
The High Court noted in its order that Shekhar published/broadcasted “offensive and obscene comments” on his Facebook account on April 19, 2018, following which a complaint was filed before the Chennai Police Commissioner. The court noted that an FIR had been registered in the matter and other private complaints had also been filed against him in different parts of Tamil Nadu.
Shekhar’s counsel argued before the High Court that he was not aware of the content of the message sent to him and had only forwarded it from his Facebook account. After learning about the derogatory comments in the message, Shekhar removed the written content within hours the same day and subsequently wrote a letter on April 20, 2018, apologizing unconditionally to the women journalists, his lawyer said.
