Veteran Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar wants the truth behind Asia Cup’s ‘Super Four’ match not to be shifted from Colombo to Hambantota to be known and believes that sometimes even players need to understand all the important aspects. The Pakistan Cricket Board is organizing the Asia Cup in a ‘hybrid model’, with India playing all its matches in Sri Lanka after refusing to travel to Pakistan.
Heavy rain is forecast in Colombo throughout the week leading to talk that the matches will be shifted from Colombo to Hambantota but the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has kept its original schedule. “One has to find the truth,” Gavaskar told ‘Sports Today’. From a cricketing point of view it seems that maybe it was the players who did not want to go to Hambantota. That is why even though the administrators knew that the weather in Colombo could be very bad, they had to change it at the last moment. Do from Hambantota to Colombo.
But the former Indian captain clarified that he is not pointing fingers at any particular country’s players. He said, “When I say players, I don’t mean players from any one team but players from all the teams who had to play there.”
Gavaskar also sympathized with the administrators as they face criticism from sports fans who are unable to watch thrilling cricket between their favorite teams due to inclement weather. “It is easy to point fingers at administrators and they can easily be made a scapegoat. So it is really important to know the weather forecast for Colombo to find out why the match was not held in Hambantota.
Although he is not against players having their own opinion about the match schedule, he wants them to be flexible when there are some unforeseen circumstances like bad weather. Rain may also disrupt the September 10 match between India and Pakistan, the second match between the two teams after the first match was called off due to rain.
Gavaskar said, “Obviously you want the player to be mentally fit. The gym facility, the practice facility should be good but sometimes in such circumstances we have to understand the important thing and the chance of rain in Hambantota was very low while in Colombo heavy rain is forecast,” he said, “and when I talk about the experiment if I say This is an opportunity to prepare for the World Cup. But I am not at all saying that the Asia Cup is a less important tournament. We have to win this tournament.
