In Bihar, the education department on Monday withdrew the revised holiday calendar for schools in less than a week. Diwali, Durga Puja and Chhath Puja holidays were cut in the revised calendar, which led the government to face criticism. The number of festive holidays was reduced from 23 to 11 in this revised school holiday calendar of the Education Department. Several teachers’ unions in Bihar have decided to launch a state-wide agitation from September 5 against various measures taken by the education department, including the cancellation of leave.

Teachers Sangh Bihar president Keshav Kumar told PTI-Bhasha that the decision to launch a protest against the department’s latest move was taken at a recent meeting of office bearers of 15 teachers unions. Keshav said, “We (teachers) work for 252 days in a year while the target set by the education department is only 220 days. Despite knowing the fact, the department reduced the leave of the teachers. This is absolutely not acceptable. On the other hand, teachers who raised their voices against the department’s decision were either suspended or asked for an explanation. He said, “It seems that Education Department Additional Chief Secretary K K Pathak, who is issuing orders almost every day, does not know the reality.”
