New Delhi. The 18 players vying for a place in India’s World Cup squad will undergo extensive fitness and medical tests in Alur as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will leave no stone unturned ahead of the prestigious event. While most of these tests are routine in nature and conducted periodically by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) or the BCCI’s medical team, they are of greater importance ahead of the World Cup in October-November.
A BCCI source familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity that, yes, most of the players will undergo regular fitness tests except for the players who have recently played the series in Ireland (Jasprit Bumrah, Pramukh Krishna, Sanju Samson). It is done with a mandatory blood test.
Parameters that will be checked include lipid profile, blood sugar (fasting and PP), uric acid, calcium, vitamin B12 and D, creatinine, testosterone. Sometimes Dexa test is also done. This is a type of scan to check bone density.
A source who has worked in the NCA said, “This is nothing new, this test is conducted when the players take a break in the middle of the series. They also have personalized diet charts and customized training modules as per their body needs.
He said that as far as rest and recovery are concerned, there is no better way than eight to nine hours of deep sleep. “It’s a well-known fact that if you get eight to nine hours of deep sleep, you’re always less likely to get injured,” he said.
