The reason behind celebrating National Sports Day in India on August 29 is that the great hockey player Major Dhyan Chand was born on this day. If we talk about Major Dhyan Chand’s contribution to the game, Dhyan Chand, popularly known as Dada, once rejected the proposal of Adolf Hitler, the world’s greatest dictator. This is in the year 1936 when the hockey final of the Berlin Olympics was being played between the hosts Germany and India. Hitler was also present in the stadium. In such a situation, the German team wanted to win the match at any cost, but Dhyan Chand was not going to let that happen.
The German team players came to blows. Dhyan Chand also broke his teeth after colliding with German goalkeeper Tito Warnholtz, but returned to the field early and India crushed Germany 8-1. Dhyan Chand scored three goals and his brother Roop Singh scored two goals in the title match. Dhyan Chand thus broke Hitler’s pride and at the same time Hitler offered Dhyan Chand German citizenship and made him a colonel in the German Army, but the then 31-year-old Dhyan Chand politely declined the offer.
