Novak Djokovic and Iga Svitek advanced to the third round of the US Open with straight sets wins in sweltering heat and humidity. Second seed Djokovic defeated Spain’s 76th seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. Meanwhile, top-seeded defending champion Switek of Poland defeated Australia’s Daria Savile 6-3, 6-4. Seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, however, suffered an upset as he lost 7-5, 6-7, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 to Swiss qualifier Dominic Stickler.

Earlier, American sixth seed Coco Gou defeated 16-year-old Mira Andreeva of Russia 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the third round. She will now face Belgium’s 32nd seed Elise Mertens, who defeated American Daniel Collins 3-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Dominic Thiem, who won the title here three years ago, retired after a match against American Ben Shelton. While French wild card Benjamin Bonzi defeated 28th seed Christopher Eubanks 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. Fourth seed Elena Ryabkina received a walkover as Australia’s Ajla Tomjanovic pulled out before the match. Tenth Top seed Karolina Muchova defeated Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, 15th seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland defeated UK qualifier Yuriko Lilly 6-3, 6-3.
