UWW suspends Wrestling Federation of India for non-election, wrestlers can’t hoist tricolor

Read on the application

United World Wrestling (UWW), the world governing body for wrestling, has suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The Wrestling Federation of India could not hold its elections on time and hence the federation faced suspension. WFI has long been embroiled in controversies. Indian Wrestling Federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been accused of sexual harassment.

According to PTI, the UWW has suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for not holding its elections on time, a development that will not allow Indian wrestlers to compete under the Indian flag in the upcoming world championships. Indian wrestlers will have to compete as ‘neutral athletes’ in the Olympic-qualifying world championships starting September 16 after an ad-hoc panel headed by Bhupender Singh Bajwa did not respect the 45-day deadline to conduct elections.
