Prime Minister Modi also expressed deep grief for those who lost their lives due to the devastating earthquake. He expressed his condolences to the affected families and offered his thoughts and support to the people of the North African country at this tragic time.
It is known that due to its location between the African and Eurasian plates, the northern region of Morocco is prone to earthquakes. In 1960, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck near the city of Agadir in Morocco, killing thousands. The Agadir earthquake led to changes in building regulations in Morocco, but many buildings, especially rural houses, are not built to withstand such shaking. In 2004, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake near the Mediterranean coastal city of Al Hoceima killed more than 600 people. Aftershocks from Friday’s earthquake were felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria.
