Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is likely to compete with all-rounder Hardik Pandya to become the vice-captain of the Indian team for the upcoming Asia Cup and ODI World Cup starting October 5. Hardik Pandya is leading Team India in the shortest format of cricket after the T20 World Cup 2022 in the absence of Rohit Sharma. At the same time, he was also made the vice-captain of the ODI team on the recent West Indies tour. But now that Jasprit Bumrah is back in the team, it is being said that Bumrah and Pandya may battle it out for the vice-captaincy in the upcoming mega events. “If you look at experience in terms of leadership, Jasprit Bumrah is ahead of Hardik Pandya,” a BCCI source aware of the matter told PTI-Bhasha on condition of confidentiality. He took over the captaincy of the Test team in 2022. He was also the vice-captain of the ODI team before Pandya during the ODI tour of South Africa.
He said, ‘It won’t be a surprise if you see Bumrah making ODI vice-captain for both Asia Cup and World Cup. This is the reason why he was given the captaincy in Ireland in place of Rituraj Gaikwad.
The Indian team for Asia Cup 2023 may be announced tomorrow i.e. on August 21. Looking ahead to World Cup 2023, Team India may announce a 17-man squad to test possible options in this Asian tournament. For the World Cup 2023, each team will be allowed to have a maximum of 15 players in their squad and all teams will have to submit this list to the ICC by September 5.
