England’s Test captain and star all-rounder Ben Stokes has recently taken a U-turn from ODI retirement. He has been included in England’s starting squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 to be held in India. Stokes was instrumental in helping England win the World Cup in 2019. In such a scenario, the England team management wants to help Stokes defend the title. Limited-overs captain Jos Buttler was tasked with persuading Stokes. Buttler has now made a big revelation about his conversation with Stokes. He said on Sunday that Stokes needed no further persuasion.
Buttler told the ICC, “It was Ben Stokes’ decision to be honest. You all know Ben very well. I don’t think anyone can convince them by talking. We talked about it a while back and then left it up to him to decide if he wanted to come back or not. We are delighted that he has agreed to return, which is great for the team.
Harry Brook made a scapegoat for Ben Stokes? Said- Can I complain?
Butler said that Ben listens to himself. He takes his own decisions. I have played with it for a long time. We are good friends. It’s not really fair for me to ask him to come back again and again. Such things do not work on Ben. We talked about it for a while and left it at that. The allure of playing in the World Cup is huge for any player who is competitive and motivated to play in an England shirt. I’m glad he agreed to it and came back.
He further said that I don’t think you need to tell how important Ben Stokes is to the team. It’s great to have them available again. Whenever a player of his quality is found again, it is tremendous. We are very happy to have him back. Let us tell you that in the World Cup 2019, Stokes scored 465 runs at an average of 66.43 and took 7 wickets in 11 matches. He scored an unbeaten 84 in the final in New Zealand. Stokes announced his retirement from the fifty-over format in July 2022.
