Yuzvendra Chahal has not been selected for the Asia Cup.
The Asia Cup will start from August 31.
New Delhi. Team India for Asia Cup 2023 has been announced on August 21. After which the uproar has increased in the Indian cricket world regarding the selection. Several bright players have not made it to the Asian squad, including the names of team spin master Yuzvendra Chahal and veteran R Ashwin. Ignoring these two, the trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Akshar Patel got a place in the team. Captain Rohit Sharma has also put forward the reason behind not including Ashwin and Chahal in the team.
Talking about R Ashwin, he played his last ODI on 21 January 2022. However, Ashwin has broken many big records with his spin in Tests this year. However, he could not return to ODIs. At the same time, Yuzvendra Chahal has also been overlooked from the Asia Cup. If we look at his statistics this year, he has taken 3 wickets in 2 ODIs and 9 wickets in 9 T20Is. Captain Rohit Sharma has cited depth in the batting as the main reason for his dismissal. He made it clear that for such a tournament he needs players who can bat at number 8 or 9 as well.
Akshar performed brilliantly – Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma said in a press conference, ‘We want someone who can bat at number 8 and 9. Akshar has performed brilliantly with the bat in all formats and in the IPL. Having him in the team is an advantage as we have batting depth, a left-arm option and can use up the order to play spin. We also thought about Ashwin and Washington Sundar. The only way to include a fast bowler was if he missed out in the team. We cannot do this because the fast bowlers are going to play a big role in the next two months.
The captain continued, ‘But the doors are open to all. If we need Chahal in the World Cup, we will try to include him in the squad. The same applies to Ashwin and Washington.
