Kane Williamson gets time for World Cup
If it does not fit in this time, it is decided to cut the leaf!
New Delhi. New Zealand limited-overs captain Kane Williamson has been given two weeks to prove his fitness for the ODI World Cup in India starting October 5. This charismatic batsman of the team has not played cricket since March. In March this year, he suffered a severe ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury in his right knee while fielding for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). After this, he had to undergo surgery in April.
The speed of his recovery from injury in the last few weeks has led the team to hope that he will regain fitness by the World Cup. “We have about two weeks to name the squad for the World Cup,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. The ICC (International Cricket Council) has given all the teams till September 5 to submit the preliminary list of 15 members. However, this list can be changed till September 27. The coach said, “We will give him every opportunity to make the most of the time. He is fully in ‘rehab mode’. He is batting again in the nets, which is great to see.
“He’s making really good progress, but he still has a lot of work to do to make sure he’s at the level we need him to be,” he said. He has joined the New Zealand team for the white ball tour. The team will play four T20 Internationals and as many ODIs before coming to India for the World Cup.
In the World Cup, New Zealand will play practice matches in India on September 29 and October 2 and the tournament opener in Ahmedabad on October 5. Steed also did not rule out the possibility of Williamson not playing in the opening matches of the World Cup despite his presence in the squad. Tom Latham, who is leading New Zealand in Williamson’s absence, will also lead the team in the World Cup.
